This whole ghazal is a prayer for return: the gazelle to Khotan, the cypress to the meadow, the soul to the body, the beloved home. If someone or something dear to you feels far away, Hafez gives you words for your longing. He trusts that, just as the sun and moon reach their stations in their time, what belongs together will be brought together again. Send your message honestly; say what you feel. Then leave the timing to the One who guides the stars, and keep a place ready in your heart.
O Lord, bring that musky gazelle back to Khotan,
and bring that tall, swaying cypress back to the meadow.
Comfort our wounded heart with a breeze;
that is, bring that soul which has left the body back to the body.
As the moon and sun reach their stations at your command,
bring my moon-faced friend back to me as well.
Eyes have turned to blood in search of the ruby of Yemen;
O Lord, bring that shining star back to Yemen.
Go, O blessed bird of auspicious traces,
carry back to the Simorgh the chatter of crow and kite.
The word is this: without you we do not want life;
listen, O messenger who gathers news, and carry the word back.
The one whose home was the eye of Hafez, O Lord,
bring him, as he wishes, from exile back to his homeland.
