Hafez urges you to throw off whatever false cloak you have been wearing and to live with honesty and joy, before the day comes when you must carry your soul elsewhere with regret. Enjoy life while it is given. Yet the last couplet brings a gentle check: do not stretch your feet beyond your own rug. Be bold in sincerity and gladness, but modest in your claims. Between these two counsels lies a balanced path: live fully, speak humbly, and let your joy be real rather than for show.
Come, Sufi, let us pull off the cloak of hypocrisy,
and strike a line of cancellation through this painted pretence.
Let us spend the cloister's vows and offerings on wine,
and wash the robe of hypocrisy in the tavern's water.
Tomorrow, if they do not give us the garden of Rezvan,
we will pull the youths out of that garden and the houris out of heaven.
Let us leap out merry, and from the Sufis' feast
plunder the wine and take the beauty in our arms.
Let us take our pleasure, or else they will drag us off in regret
on the day we carry the soul's baggage to another world.
God's secret, which sits secluded behind the curtain of the unseen,
let us drunkenly draw the veil back from its face.
Where is one glimpse of his eyebrow, so that, like the new moon,
we might catch the ball of heaven in the curve of a golden polo-stick?
Hafez, it is not our place to make such boasts;
why should we stretch our feet beyond our own rug?
