Hafez · Ghazal 356 · If I can sit with my beloved
Hafez asks to be remembered: if every speck of dust carried by the wind has received some bounty, surely a long-serving friend deserves a glance. If you feel you have been passed over while others were given their share, this verse speaks for you, gently and without bitterness. It also reminds you of your real gifts: a quick falcon, a skilled pen, a faithful and truthful heart. These are rarer than you think. Ask, be patient, and trust that true quality is eventually recognised.
If it is in my power to sit with my heart's beloved,
I will drink from the cup of union and pick roses in the garden of delight.
The bitter wine that burns the Sufi will tear up my foundation;
put your lip to my lip, O saqi, and take my sweet soul.
Perhaps I am going mad in this passion, for from night until day
I talk to the moon and see a fairy in my sleep.
Your lip gave sugar to the drunk, your eye gave wine to the drinkers;
I am the one who, in utter deprivation, has neither this nor that.
Since every speck of dust the wind brings has had a share of your bounty,
remember the state of your servant, for I have served you long.
Not everyone who strings verse together speaks words that please the heart;
I catch the rare pheasant, because my falcon is quick.
If you do not believe it, go and ask the painter of China,
for Mani asks for a copy from the tip of my musky pen.
Faithfulness and speaking the truth are not everyone's work;
I am the servant of the second Asaf, Jalal al-Haqq wa al-Din.
Hear the secrets of drunkenness and rendi from me, not from the preacher,
for with cup and goblet I am every moment the companion of the moon and the Pleiades.
