If I can sit with my beloved

Hafez

If it is in my power to sit with my heart's beloved,

I will drink from the cup of union and pick roses in the garden of delight.

The bitter wine that burns the Sufi will tear up my foundation;

put your lip to my lip, O saqi, and take my sweet soul.

Perhaps I am going mad in this passion, for from night until day

I talk to the moon and see a fairy in my sleep.

Your lip gave sugar to the drunk, your eye gave wine to the drinkers;

I am the one who, in utter deprivation, has neither this nor that.

Since every speck of dust the wind brings has had a share of your bounty,

remember the state of your servant, for I have served you long.

Not everyone who strings verse together speaks words that please the heart;

I catch the rare pheasant, because my falcon is quick.

If you do not believe it, go and ask the painter of China,

for Mani asks for a copy from the tip of my musky pen.

Faithfulness and speaking the truth are not everyone's work;

I am the servant of the second Asaf, Jalal al-Haqq wa al-Din.

Hear the secrets of drunkenness and rendi from me, not from the preacher,

for with cup and goblet I am every moment the companion of the moon and the Pleiades.
