Hafez · Ghazal 348 · I will make my eyes a sea
This is a bold ghazal. Hafez decides to stop waiting, to cast his heart into the sea, and to go where his gladness lives. His last line is a clear counsel: since time cannot be relied on, why postpone today's joy until tomorrow? If you have been holding back, this verse gives you courage to move toward what truly gladdens you. Do not let past hurts or old regrets keep you on the shore. The sky's arrows are real, but so is the music you can still make.
I will make my eyes a sea and throw patience out into the desert,
and in this venture I will cast my heart into the sea.
From my narrow, sinful heart I will heave a sigh
that sets fire to the sin of Adam and Eve.
The source of a glad heart is where the heart's beloved is;
I am striving to throw myself there, somehow.
Undo the fastening of your robe, O moon whose cap is the sun,
so that, like your curl, I may lay my passion-struck head at your feet.
I have been struck by the arrow of the sky; give me wine, so that, drunk,
I may tie a knot in the belt of Gemini's quiver.
I will scatter the cup's last drops over this moving throne
and fill this azure dome with the sound of the harp.
Hafez, since relying on time is a slip and a mistake,
why should I put off today's pleasure until tomorrow?
