The faal · release

Every line of this ghazal ends in rising: from the snare of the world, from dust, from old age into youth. Hafez prays for a rain of guidance to fall in time, and trusts that love can lift him again however low he has come. If you feel tired or held down, let this be your answer: a single touch of grace, a single night of closeness, can send you out at dawn renewed. Ask for the rain, and get ready to rise.

The ghazal in English

Where is the good news of union with you, that I may rise from my life?
I am a bird of holiness, and I will rise from the snare of the world.

By my love for you, if you call me your servant,
I will rise above lordship over all of being and space.

O Lord, send down a rain from the cloud of guidance
before I rise like dust and vanish from the midst.

Sit at my grave with wine and minstrel,
so that at your scent I rise dancing from the tomb.

Rise and show your stature, O idol of sweet movements,
so that I rise, waving my hands, above life and the world.

Though I am old, hold me close in your arms one night,
so that at dawn I rise young from your embrace.

On the day of my death, give me a breath's time to see you,
so that, like Hafez, I may rise above life and the world.
