Hafez · We hoped for friendship from friends
This ghazal touches a quiet disappointment: help or loyalty you expected from others did not come as you hoped. Hafez does not rage. He plants a seed and walks on, chooses dignity over argument, and keeps the side of respect. Perhaps you have given much of yourself, and some of the beauty you saw in another was the light of your own care. The closing line is honest and freeing: you gave your heart by your own choice. Let go of the grievance, keep the seed in the ground, and leave the fruit to its season. Your goodness is not lost.
We looked to our friends for friendship;
what we supposed was itself mistaken.
Who knows when the tree of friendship will bear fruit?
For now we have gone our way, having planted a seed.
Talk and quarrel were not the dervish's custom;
otherwise we had many a story to settle with you.
The manner of your eye held the deceit of war;
we were wrong, and took it for peace.
The rose-bush of your beauty did not delight hearts by itself;
we set the breath of our devotion upon it.
Many fine points were made, and no one complained;
we never abandoned the side of respect.
The beloved said, "Hafez, you gave us your heart yourself;
we set no bailiff on anyone."
