Do not shoot your glance at my heart
Hafez
Do not shoot the arrow of your glance at my heart,
lest I die before your languid eye.
Your beauty has reached its full measure of wealth;
give me alms from it, for I am poor and in need.
How long, O zahid, will you beguile me like a child
with the apple of the garden, with honey and milk?
The space of my breast has so filled with the Friend
that the thought of myself is lost from my mind.
Fill the bowl, for in the fortune of love
I am the world's young and lucky one, though I am old.
I have made a pact with the wine-sellers
that on a day of sorrow I will take up nothing but the cup.
May the pen of my scribe draw no figure
except the reckoning of minstrel and wine.
In this uproar, where no one asks after anyone,
I am grateful to the Magian elder.
How sweet the moment when, in the self-sufficiency of drunkenness,
I have no need of king or vizier.
I am that bird whose song, every evening and every dawn,
comes down from the roof of the highest heaven.
Like Hafez I hold His treasure in my breast,
even if the pretender looks on me as worthless.
