Hafez · Ghazal 328 · Who am I?
You may be setting out on something new, aware that the road is long and that you are only a beginner. Hafez asks for a blessing to escort him, and for someone to remember him in their dawn prayers. Do the same: ask for support, and accept the kindness that comes, even if you feel you have not earned it. Humility and hope travel well together. Dive deep for the pearl you seek, and trust that your sincere words will be met with generosity.
Who am I, that I should pass through that fragrant mind?
You show such kindness, you the dust of whose door is the crown on my head.
My beloved, who taught you to cherish your servant? Tell me,
for I would never suspect your watchmen of it.
Let your blessing escort me on the road, O bird of holiness,
for the road to the goal is long, and I am new to travelling.
O breeze of dawn, carry my service to her,
and say: do not forget me in your dawn prayers.
Happy the day when I bind my load and leave this stage,
and my companions ask for news of me at the head of your lane.
Hafez, it would be fitting if, in quest of the pearl of union,
I made my eyes a sea of tears and dived in.
The rank of verse is high and it conquers the world; speak,
so that the king, who is a sea, may fill my mouth with pearls.
