Hafez · Ghazal 327 · A pact with my beloved
This ghazal speaks from a place of contentment. Hafez has what he loves close at hand, a cypress in his own house, and so he has no need to look at every other garden. If you have been distracted by what others have or say, this verse turns you back to what is already yours. With the right protection and the right love, slander and rivalry lose their sting. Keep faith with those who share your loves, and value the quiet, private hours of the heart.
I have a pact with my beloved: as long as there is life in my body,
I will hold those who love her lane as dear as my own life.
The purity of my heart's solitude I seek from that candle of Chigil;
the light of my eyes and my heart's radiance I have from that moon of Khotan.
Since I have found a private hour, as my heart desired,
why should I think of the malice of slanderers in the crowd?
In my house I have a cypress, and in the shade of its stature
I have no need of the garden cypress or the meadow's boxwood.
If a hundred armies of the fair lie in ambush for my heart,
thanks and praise be to God, I have an idol who routs armies.
It is fitting that by her ruby seal-ring I claim to be Solomon;
since I hold the Greatest Name, why should I fear Ahriman?
O wise elder, do not blame me for the tavern,
for when it comes to giving up the cup, my heart breaks its pledge.
For God's sake, watchman, close your eyes a moment tonight,
for I have a hundred secret words to say to her silent ruby lip.
Since, thank God, I stroll in the rose garden of her favour,
I have no wish for tulip or jasmine, nor need of the wild rose's petal.
Hafez has become famous for rendi among his companions, but
what grief have I, when in this world I have Qavam al-Din Hasan?
