Hafez · Ghazal 322 · I drew your image

The faal · longing

You carry an image in your heart that nothing else quite matches, and you have spent a great deal of feeling in pursuit of it. Hafez knows that devotion well. His counsel is in the breeze: let a little news, a little dust from the beloved's lane, reach you, and let the bud of your heart open rather than stay closed and hurting. You need not shy away from people like a wild deer. Hold your longing tenderly, and let it bring you light rather than isolation.

The ghazal in English

I drew the image of your form in the workshop of my eye;
I have never seen or heard of a beauty like you.

Though in seeking you I ride rein to rein with the north wind,
I have not reached the dust of your swaying cypress stature.

In the night of your curls I did not tie my hope to the day of life;
for the circle of your mouth, I gave up hope of my heart's desire.

In longing for your fountain of sweetness, what drops I have shed!
From your wine-selling ruby lip, what coy promises I have bought!

With your glance, what arrows you have loosed on my wounded heart!
In sorrow at the head of your lane, what burdens I have carried!

O morning breeze, bring a little dust from the Friend's lane,
for I caught from that earth the scent of a wounded heart's blood.

The fault lay with your dark eye and your graceful neck
that I, like a wild deer, have shied away from people.

Like a rosebud, a breeze from her lane passed over my head,
and at her scent I tore the veil over my bleeding heart.

I swear by the dust of your feet and by the light of Hafez's eyes
that without your face I have seen no light in the lamp of my eye.
