Hafez · Ghazal 318 · You see me

The faal · longing

Longing that grows with every glance runs through this ghazal, along with the ache of waiting to be asked after. If you are waiting for someone to notice, Hafez reminds you that the night of searching ended in a sudden embrace. Do not let the silence persuade you that warmth is gone for good. Hold on with quiet faith, speak your need honestly, and remember his last word: where there is real warmth between you, the cold breath of others need not frighten you.

The ghazal in English

You see me, and every moment you add to my pain;
I see you, and every moment my longing grows.

You do not ask how I am; I do not know what you have in mind;
you make no effort to heal me; do you not know my pain?

This is no way, to leave me on the dust and run;
pass by again and ask after me, so I may become the dust of your road.

I will not take my hand from your hem except in the grave, and even then,
when you walk over my grave, my dust will catch your hem.

My breath has sunk in grief for your love; how long will you beguile me?
You have ruined me, and you will not even say, "I have ruined him."

One night in the dark I was searching your curls for my heart again;
I saw your face, and drank again from a crescent cup.

Suddenly I drew you into my arms, and your tresses twisted;
I laid my lips on your lips and gave my heart and soul.

Be happy with Hafez; go, tell the enemy he may give up his life;
since I feel warmth from you, why should I fear a cold-breathed foe?
