You may be facing a long road, with sea and mountain between you and what you hope for, and feeling tired before you have begun. Hafez calls on Khezr, the green guide of travellers, and his verse promises that help comes to those who set out for love. Do not let past mistakes convince you that you are unworthy; the moment you turned toward love, you were counted among the people of mercy. Even if you are far in body, stay near in heart.
Come back, saqi, for I am eager to serve you,
longing to be your servant and praying for your fortune.
Since the grace of the cup of happiness is your radiance,
show me the way out of the darkness of my bewilderment.
Though I am drowned in a sea of sin in a hundred ways,
since I came to know love I am among the people of mercy.
Do not blame me for rendi and ill repute, O wise man,
for this was my lot, written in the court of allotment.
Drink wine, for being a lover is not earned or chosen;
this gift came to me as the inheritance of my nature.
I, who in all my life never chose to leave my homeland,
for love of seeing you now long to be a stranger far away.
Sea and mountain lie on the road, and I am tired and weak;
O Khezr of blessed footsteps, help me with your grace.
In outward form I am far from the door of your house of fortune,
but in heart and soul I am one of those who dwell in your presence.
Hafez will give up his life before your eyes;
this is my hope, if life allows me the time.
