This ghazal opens with good news: safety has returned, and what was unsettled has come home. If you have been through a time of strain, Hafez invites you to give thanks and to welcome the messenger of relief with an open hand. He also offers a quiet counsel: keep faith with your promises, for trust broken is hard to mend and late regret helps little. Where there is a kind friend who understands, even the strict will join the celebration. Let yourself rejoice.
Good news! For safety has come to rest at Dhu Salam;
praise be to God, from one who confesses the fullness of His gifts.
Where is that bearer of good tidings who brought word of this victory,
so I may scatter my life like gold and silver at his feet?
Since the King's return to this delightful dwelling,
his enemy's march is toward the pavilion of nothingness.
The breaker of pledges will surely come to a broken state:
pledges, with a king of wisdom, are sacred bonds.
He sought some mercy from the cloud of hope, but
nothing gave out moisture before his sight except his own eyes.
He fell into the Nile of sorrow, and the sky said to him in mockery:
"Now you are sorry, but what good is sorrow now?"
Since the saqi was a moon-faced friend and one who knew the secret,
Hafez drank the wine, and so did the shaykh and the jurist.
