Hafez · Ghazal 292 · I swear by the glory of Shah Shoja

The faal · peace

Hafez begins with a vow: he has no quarrel with anyone over wealth or position. There is a deep peace in that, and it may be the counsel you need. Let go of rivalries that wear you down. The world turns, and even the sternest critic may one day be found dancing to the harp, so do not take others' judgement too much to heart. Ask for what you need humbly and without pressing, trusting the generosity of the one you serve. Thirst, but do not grasp.

The ghazal in English

I swear by the majesty, rank and glory of Shah Shoja
that I quarrel with no one over wealth or position.

Enough of my home-brewed wine; bring the wine of the Magians.
The drinking companion has come; O friend repentance, farewell.

For God's sake, wash my cloak clean with wine,
for I catch no scent of good from the way things are.

See how he goes dancing to the harp's lament,
the one who would not allow us to listen to the music of sama.

In thanks for this blessing, cast a glance upon the lovers,
for I am an obedient slave, and you the king who is obeyed.

We thirst for the bounty of a sip from your cup, but
we will not be bold, nor give you any trouble.

May God never part the brow and face of Hafez
from the dust of the court of Shah Shoja's greatness.
