This ghazal repeats one gentle request: do not hold back. If fortune has helped you bloom, Hafez asks you to share it with those who stood by you when you were only a new moon. The world and everything in it is small and passing, so give freely of your kindness, your words and your attention. Generosity costs little and leaves a good name. If you are the one waiting for a kind word, the last couplet is for you: the dust of grief will settle and your state will turn happy. Let your feelings flow; do not hold them back.
Breeze, do not hold back from passing by the beloved's dwelling,
and do not hold back news of her from the lover who has lost his heart.
In thanks that you have bloomed as fortune wished, O rose,
do not hold back the breeze of union from the bird of dawn.
I was the companion of your love when you were a new moon;
now that you are a full moon, do not hold back your glance.
The world and all that is in it is slight and brief;
do not hold back this little from people of understanding.
Now that your sweet ruby lip is a fountain of candy,
speak, and do not hold back sugar from the parrot.
The poet carries your noble deeds to the far horizons;
do not hold back his allowance and his provision for the road.
Since you seek a good name, the word is this:
do not hold back silver and gold in the price of words.
The dust of grief will go, and your state will turn happy, Hafez;
only do not hold back your tears on this road.
