Hafez · Ghazal 246 · It is the feast, and the rose is ending

The faal · forgiveness

The fast is over, the feast has come, and friends are waiting. This ghazal tells you that a hope you had nearly given up has been revived through the prayers of good people. Accept that gift. Hafez also asks you not to tie your heart too tightly to the world, and to be gentle with your own imperfections: generous forgiveness covers many faults, and the pious and the free-spirited may stand closer than they think. Seasons pass quickly, the rose is already leaving, so do not wait for a perfect moment. Celebrate what is here now.

The ghazal in English

It is the feast, the rose season is ending, and the friends are waiting;
saqi, see the moon in the king's face, and bring wine.

I had given up hope of the days of the rose, but
the high prayers of the pure who fasted have done their work.

Do not bind your heart to the world; when you are drunk, ask
about the bounty of the cup and the tale of Jamshid, who had his wish.

I hold nothing in my hand but the coin of my soul; where is the wine?
For I would scatter that too before the saqi's glance.

It is a happy, flourishing reign, and a generous, gracious king;
O Lord, keep him from the evil eye of time.

Drink wine to your servant's poetry, for it lends another beauty
to your jewelled cup with this royal pearl.

If the meal before dawn was missed, what loss? There is the morning cup;
those who seek the beloved break their fast with wine.

Since your generous forgiveness covers every fault,
pardon our heart, for it is a coin of poor alloy.

I fear that on the day of resurrection they will ride rein to rein,
the shaykh's rosary and the wine-drinking rend's cloak.

Hafez, since the fast has gone and the rose is going too,
there is nothing for it but to drink, for the moment is slipping away.
