Hafez · Ghazal 205 · As long as there is wine and tavern
Hafez declares a faithfulness that does not change: we are as we were, and so it will be. If you are wondering whether to stay true to a path, a person or a calling, this ghazal answers with constancy. Do not let others' opinions shake what has been in your heart from the beginning; neither they nor you can see behind every veil. Some things remain a mystery, and that is all right. Keep your devotion humble and steady, and take care that hesitation does not let what you love slip into other hands.
As long as there is any name or trace of tavern and wine,
my head will be the dust of the road of the Magian elder.
The ring of the Magian elder has been in my ear since the first day;
we are as we were, and so it will be.
When you pass by my grave, ask for a blessing,
for it will be the place of pilgrimage for the rends of the world.
Go, self-regarding zahid, for from my eyes and yours
the secret of this veil is hidden, and hidden it will stay.
My lover-slaying Turk went out drunk today;
let us see whose blood will flow from the eyes next.
My eye, from the moment it lays its head in the grave from longing for you,
will keep watching until the dawn of resurrection.
If Hafez's fortune helps him in this way,
the beloved's curl will be in other hands.
