Hafez · Ghazal 185 · Will they ever assay the coins?

The faal · sincerity

Hafez longs for a day when every coin is tested for its true metal and pretence is set aside. Perhaps you are tired of appearances, your own or others'. His counsel is simple: hold on to what you genuinely love, and do not boast of your strength or self-control, for the heart can be won in a single glance. Enjoy the music and the shared dance of life. And where people are indifferent to those in need, you are free to step quietly aside and keep your own company honest.

The ghazal in English

Will it ever happen that they test the coins for their true metal,
so that all the keepers of cloisters go about some honest work?

My counsel is that the friends should all leave their work
and take hold of the curve of a beloved's lock.

The companions have taken a fine hold of the saqi's curl,
if only the heavens let them find a little rest.

Do not boast to the fair of the strength of your abstinent arm,
for in this troop they take a fortress with a single rider.

O Lord, how bold in bloodshed these young Turks are,
who with the arrow of the eyelash take a new prey each moment.

Dancing to fresh verse and the cry of the reed is sweet,
above all a dance in which one takes a beloved's hand.

Hafez, the people of the age have no care for the poor;
if it is possible, it is better to keep apart from them.
