Hafez · Ghazal 166 · The day of separation is over
This is one of the gladdest answers the Divan can give. Hafez cast this very omen and saw the night of separation end, the winter wind and the proud thorn give way to the spring breeze. A long difficulty in your life may be closer to its end than you think. If you find it hard to believe, after so many disappointments, that is natural; Hafez could hardly believe it either. Let the dawn of hope come out from behind its veil. Thank those who cared for you, and allow yourself to feel the relief.
The day of separation and the night of parting from the beloved are over;
I cast this omen, the star moved on, and the matter came to an end.
All that pride and luxury the autumn indulged in
came to an end at last at the feet of the spring breeze.
Thanks be to God, that by the good fortune of the rose's tilted cap
the arrogance of the winter wind and the pomp of the thorn are over.
Tell the dawn of hope, that sat secluded behind the veil of the unseen:
"Come out, for the work of the dark night is done."
The confusion of long nights and the grief of the heart
all came to an end in the shade of the beloved's tresses.
I still cannot believe it, for the days have broken faith so often,
that the tale of sorrow has ended in the beloved's reign.
Saqi, you have been kind, may your cup be full of wine,
for by your care the torment of the after-ache is over.
Though no one ever counted Hafez as anyone,
thanks be that a hardship beyond all counting has ended.
