Hafez · Ghazal 165 · Love of the dark-eyed ones

The faal · the present moment

Some loves are written into you and will not leave, and Hafez accepts this calmly as heaven's decree. Others may have caused harm or made peace seem impossible, yet the quiet prayers of those who rise early still reach the sky. The heart of this ghazal is a simple question: you have good wine, a safe place and a kind companion; if things are not good now, when will they be? Look honestly at what is already given to you. The season you are waiting for may already have arrived.

The ghazal in English

Love of the dark-eyed ones will never leave my head;
this is the decree of heaven, and it will not be otherwise.

The rival did so much harm and left no room for peace;
will the sighs of the dawn-risers not rise to the heavens?

On the first day they assigned me no work but rendi;
whatever share was allotted there will not grow any greater.

For God's sake, muhtasib, forgive us the cry of the drum and the flute,
for the music of the law will not lose its measure by this tale.

My only scope is to practise her love in secret;
of the embrace and the kiss, what can I say, since it will not be?

Ruby wine, a safe place, and a kind beloved as saqi:
O heart, when will your affairs be better, if not now?

Eye, do not wash the picture of grief from the tablet of Hafez's breast,
for it is the wound of the beloved's sword, and the colour of blood will not fade.
