Hafez · Ghazal 149 · My heart takes no other path

The faal · constancy

Your heart has chosen its path, and no amount of advice from any direction will turn it. Hafez does not apologise for this. He prefers the honest wine whose jewel holds nothing but truth to a cloak of pretence no one would trade for a cup. Even if your fire does not catch at once, keep your aim, as Alexander sought his mirror. Know which door is yours and do not wander from it. A heart that knows what it loves is rare; trust its steadiness.

The ghazal in English

My heart will take no path but love for the moon-faced;
I give it advice from every side, but it does not take.

For God's sake, adviser, speak of the goblet and wine,
for no image takes hold in our mind more pleasing than this.

Come, rose-cheeked saqi, bring the coloured wine,
for no thought takes root within us better than this.

I drink from the flask in secret, and people think it is a book;
it is a wonder the fire of this pretence does not catch in the book.

One day I will burn this patched cloak,
for the elder of the wine-sellers would not take it for a single cup.

That is why friends find such purity in her ruby wine:
nothing but truth takes form in that jewel.

Such a charming head, such eyes, and you tell me to sew my eyes shut?
Go away, for this empty sermon does not enter my head.

The adviser of the rends is at war with the decree of fate;
I see his heart is very narrow; perhaps it cannot hold a goblet.

In the midst of weeping I laugh, for like the candle in this gathering
I have a tongue of fire, but it does not catch.

How finely you have caught my heart! I adore your drunken eye;
no one catches wild birds more sweetly than this.

The matter is our need and the beloved's indifference;
what use is sorcery, O heart, when it does not take hold of the heart-stealer?

One day, like Alexander, I will take that mirror in my hand,
whether this fire catches for a while or not.

For God's sake, have mercy, O wealthy one, for the dervish of your lane
knows no other door and takes no other road.

With this fresh, sweet poetry, I am amazed at the king of kings:
why does he not clothe Hafez from head to foot in gold?
