Hafez · Ghazal 124 · Life is in a hurry
"It is life, and life is in a hurry," Hafez says, and the line may be the one you most need to hear. Do not let the days pass like wind over what matters. Your tears, the verse suggests, have not been wasted; they water the cypress you love. Even the sun sometimes stands behind a cloud, and what looks like coldness may be only a veil. If you hope for an answer, keep asking gently. Fortunate is the one who hears back from the Friend, and that may yet be you.
She whose hyacinth curls give the musk-dark perfume its twist
is once again coy and reproachful with the lovesick.
You pass over the head of the one you slew, like the wind;
what can be done? It is life, and life is in a hurry.
Her moon, which shines like the sun behind the veil of her curl,
is a sun with a cloud before it.
My eye has set a flood of tears running into every corner
so that your slender cypress may have fresher water.
Your playful glance spills my blood in error;
may it be given time, for it has a fine sense of what is right.
If the water of life is what the Friend's lip holds,
then it is clear that Khizr has only a share in a mirage.
Your languid eye has designs on my heart and liver;
it is a drunken Turk; perhaps it has a taste for kebab.
My ailing soul has no face to ask anything of you;
how fortunate the wounded one who has an answer from the Friend.
When will it cast a glance towards the wounded heart of Hafez,
her drunken eye, which leaves ruin in every corner?
