Every note love plays leads somewhere, even the sorrowful ones. If your tears feel like a wound, the verse answers gently: this is love's pain, and its remedy is a warm, burning one. Hafez reminds you that the generous One covers faults, and that a king does well to ask after the beggar next door. Every deed has its return, so offer kindness rather than sharpness. Turn towards faces that are clear and honest, and trust that your prayer will be answered with a prayer.
The minstrel of love has a wondrous instrument and song;
every note he strikes leads somewhere.
May the world never be empty of the lovers' lament,
for it has a sweet-toned melody that brings delight.
Though our dreg-drinking elder has neither gold nor power,
he has a God who gives freely and covers faults.
Hold my heart in honour, for this sugar-loving fly,
since it became your well-wisher, has the splendour of the huma.
It would not be far from justice if he asked after his state,
the king who has a beggar for a neighbour.
I showed my tears of blood to the physicians; they said,
"It is the pain of love, and its remedy burns the heart."
Do not learn cruelty from the glance, for in the creed of love
every deed has its wage, and every act its return.
Finely said that wine-loving young Christian idol:
"Drink to the joy of a face that has some purity."
O king, Hafez who sits at your door has recited the Fatiha,
and from your tongue he hopes for a prayer in return.
