The faal · good fortune

This short ghazal is a blessing offered to a king, and you may take it as a blessing on whatever you are undertaking. It wishes that the field before you be wide, that success follow your banner, and that wisdom serve you in all you set your hand to. Step forward with confidence and with a sense of responsibility, as a good ruler would. Let your work be guided by reason and grace, so that what you build becomes a garden others are glad to share.

The ghazal in English

O king, may the ball of the heavens be in the curve of your polo stick;
may the whole expanse of being and place be your playing field.

The tress of the Lady Victory is enamoured of your banner;
may the eye of eternal conquest be in love with your charge.

O you whose glory is the theme of Mercury's compositions,
may Universal Reason be the servant who draws the seal of your chancery.

Your cypress-like stature has shamed the grace of the Tuba tree;
may the expanse of your garden be the envy of highest paradise.

Not only animals and plants and stones:
may all that is in the world of command be at your command.
