This ghazal is a string of blessings, each one beginning 'may it be'. Hafez wishes beauty, shelter and sweetness on the one he loves, and asks only that they look kindly on those who long for them. Receive these blessings as if spoken to you. Your love, Hafez says, is renewed every moment, and the one you love grows more beautiful every hour. Let your affection stay fresh rather than settled into habit, and offer your own good wishes freely. Blessings given return to the giver.
May your beauty be the sun of every eye;
may your fair face be fairer than fairness itself.
Beneath the wing of the huma of your curl, with its falcon's pinions,
may the hearts of the kings of the world be sheltered.
Whoever is not bound by your curl,
may he be, like your curl, tangled and turned upside down.
Any heart that is not in love with your face,
may it always be drowned in its own blood.
Idol, when your glance scatters its arrows,
may my wounded heart be a shield before it.
When your sugared ruby lip grants a kiss,
may the palate of my soul be filled with sugar from it.
From you, every moment, I have a fresh love;
may you have, every hour, a new beauty.
With all his soul, Hafez longs for your face:
may you look kindly on the state of those who long.
