You Who Nourish What Is Within

Sanai

O you who nourish what is within and adorn what is without,

who give wisdom, and forgive those without wisdom;

Creator and Provider of earth and time,

Keeper and Helper of every place and all who dwell in it;

from your making come every place and all who dwell there;

under your command are time and earth.

Fire and water, wind and the still earth,

all are under the command of your power, beyond all asking how.

A note for readers

The opening couplets of the Hadiqat al-Haqiqa (The Walled Garden of Truth), Sanai’s long didactic poem, usually regarded as the first great Sufi masnavi in Persian. Like most long Persian poems it begins in praise of God. Rumi quotes Sanai often in his own Masnavi.

One could speak for a lifetime of the beloved’s tresses;

do not fret that there are no themes left.
