Think on the Ups and Downs of Time

Saeb Tabrizi

O heart, think on the ups and downs of time;

in your season of fruit, think on the dearth of leaf and fruit.

At one breath of wind the book of days is thrown into disorder;

think on how night and day keep turning the pages.

No one can sleep safely on the edge of a perilous roof;

if you want to be safe, think on the heights of high standing.

The comforts of this world are never without the poison of regret;

fear the vein of carefree sleep as you would a snake.

The moon begins to wane once it is full;

when your cup is brimming, think on the hangover.

A note for readers

The opening of a ghazal of warnings on the refrain ‘think on’ (andishe kon). In each couplet Saeb pairs a rule of prudence with an image from nature or daily life: the book of days scattered by a breath of wind, the full moon that begins to wane, the brimming cup that brings a hangover.
