The Thought of Your Stature

Bidel Dehlaviبیدل دهلوی

ای خیال قامتت آه ضعیفان را عصا

O you, the thought of whose stature is a staff for the sighs of the weak,

بر رخت نظاره ها را لغزش از جوش صفا

before whose face our gazes slip on the gloss of its purity;

نشئهٔ صدخم شراب از چشم مستت غمزه ای

one glance from your drunken eye holds the intoxication of a hundred jars of wine,

خونبهای صد چمن از جلوه هایت یک ادا

one graceful gesture of yours is the blood-price of a hundred meadows.

A note for readers

The opening couplets of a ghazal in praise of the beloved, typical of Bidel’s way of turning familiar images into paradox: the beloved’s tall stature, usually a cypress, becomes a staff that holds up the lover’s sighs. The blood-price is the compensation owed for a killing; a single gesture of the beloved is worth more than whole gardens.

One could speak for a lifetime of the beloved’s tresses;

do not fret that there are no themes left.
