The Narrow Flask

Bidel Dehlaviبیدل دهلوی

بی نشان بود این چمن گر وسعتی می‌داشت دل

Had the heart held any breadth, this meadow would have left no trace;

رنگ می بیرون نشست از بس که مینا تنگ بود

the wine’s colour seeped outside because the flask was so narrow.

A note for readers

A couplet from a ghazal by Bidel, often quoted on its own. The visible world, ‘this meadow’, is pictured as the colour of wine showing through the glass, because the heart that should contain it is too narrow.

One could speak for a lifetime of the beloved’s tresses;

do not fret that there are no themes left.

بلبلی برگ گلی خوش رنگ در منقار داشت

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.
