The Green Field of the Sky

Hafez

I saw the green field of the sky and the sickle of the new moon;

I remembered what I had sown, and the time of harvest.

I said, ‘O Fortune, you have slept, and the sun has risen.’

She said, ‘For all that, do not despair of the grace decreed before time.’

If you go up to heaven pure and unencumbered, like the Messiah,

a hundred rays will reach the sun from your lamp.

Do not rely on the night-thief star, for this rogue

carried off the crown of Kavus and the belt of Kay Khosrow.

A note for readers

The opening couplets of a ghazal that begins with the night sky as a field ready for harvest, a reminder of the deeds the speaker has sown. Jesus, who in Islamic tradition was raised to the fourth heaven, is the model of the soul that travels light, and Kavus and Kay Khosrow are kings of the Shahnameh. The excerpt gives four of the ghazal’s nine couplets.
