The Gourd and the Plane Tree

Anvari

Have you not heard how, beneath a plane tree, a gourd vine

sprang up and ran up it in twenty days?

It asked the plane tree, ‘How many days old are you?’

The plane tree said, ‘My age is more than two hundred.’

It said, ‘In twenty days I have grown past you;

tell me, what is all this sluggishness for?’

The plane tree said, ‘I have no quarrel with you;

this is no day for fighting and no time for judging.

Tomorrow, when the autumn wind blows on you and me,

then it will be seen which of us is weak and which is strong.’

A note for readers

A complete qit'a in the form of a fable: the fast-growing gourd boasts to the slow plane tree, which answers that the autumn wind will show who lasts. It is one of the best-known short poems in Persian, often quoted against quick and shallow success. The ‘autumn wind’ is literally the wind of Mehregan, the old Iranian autumn festival.
