The First Wine Poured in the Cup
Fakhr al-Din Iraqi
The first wine they poured into the cup
they borrowed from the drunken eye of the cupbearer.
When they found the people of delight still in their senses,
they poured the wine of selflessness into the cup.
The beloved’s wine-red lip handed out the cup,
and they named it the wine of lovers.
To hunt the hearts of all the world
they made the tresses of the fair into a snare.
Wherever in the world there was an aching heart,
they gathered it together and called it love.
A note for readers
The opening of one of Iraqi’s best-known ghazals, a short account of how love entered the world. The unnamed ‘they’ who pour the first wine are usually read as the powers of creation, and the wine as divine love, borrowed from the beloved’s glance. The excerpt gives five couplets of a longer ghazal.

One could speak for a lifetime of the beloved’s tresses;
do not fret that there are no themes left.
A Lifetime on the Beloved’s Tresses
A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,
and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.
A nightingale held a rose petal
A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,
became friend and companion to our startled heart.
