The First Step in Love

Fakhr al-Din Iraqi

The first step in love is to throw away your head,

to stake your life and make peace with affliction.

That is the beginning; do you know what the end is?

It is to empty yourself of your own selfhood.

A note for readers

A quatrain from Iraqi’s Divan on the road of love: it begins with giving up your head and your life, and ends with giving up the self itself.
