O King, I Speak Your Praise
Sanai
O King, I speak your remembrance, for you are pure, and you are God;
I go by no road but the one you show me.
Your court alone I seek; by your grace alone I move;
your Oneness alone I proclaim, for Oneness is your due.
You have no wife or partner; you neither eat nor sleep;
you are One, without wife or partner, a King whose will is done.
You have no need of being born, no need of a son;
you are the Lord of majesty, the helper of princes.
You are wise, you are mighty, you are generous, you are merciful;
you are the one who shows grace, you are worthy of praise.
A note for readers
A hymn to God that piles up the divine attributes in short, rhythmic phrases. Several lines echo the Quran’s Sura of Sincerity (112), which says that God neither begets nor is begotten. The excerpt gives the first five of its thirteen couplets; in the last, the poet names himself.
