Love Set a Tumult in Our Nature

Fakhr al-Din Iraqi

Love set a tumult in our nature,

and laid our soul in the crucible of longing.

It cast a murmur of talk upon our tongue,

and set a seeking within us.

It began the tale of those who steal hearts,

and set a longing in the frenzied heart.

A note for readers

The opening of a ghazal in which Love is the one who acts and the lover only the place where it works. The repeated rhyme word nahad, ‘set’ or ‘laid’, gives the poem its drive. The excerpt gives the first three couplets.

do not fret that there are no themes left.
