Love Seemed Easy at First

Hafez

Ah, O saqi, pass the cup around and hand it to me,

for love seemed easy at first, but then came the troubles.

In hope of the musk-pod scent the east wind at last will loosen from that forelock,

from the twist of those dark musky curls, what blood has fallen into hearts!

What safety of pleasure have I in the beloved's lodging, when every moment

the caravan bell cries out: "Bind fast the litters!"

Stain your prayer-mat with wine if the Pir of the Magians tells you to,

for the wayfarer is not unaware of the road and the customs of its stages.

A dark night, the dread of the waves, and a whirlpool so terrible:

how could the lightly laden on the shore know our state?

My every deed, from following my own desire, ended at last in ill repute;

how could that secret stay hidden of which they make their gatherings?

If you want presence, Hafez, do not be absent from Him:

when you meet the one you long for, leave the world and let it go.

A note for readers

This is the opening couplet of the first ghazal in the Divan of Hafez of Shiraz, the most beloved lyric poet in Persian. The first half-line is in Arabic, the second in Persian, a mixing of languages Persian poets often enjoyed. The saqi, or cupbearer, is a stock figure of the ghazal who can be read both literally and mystically. The Divan of Hafez is the book families open at random on Yalda night.

A nightingale held in its beak a rose petal of lovely colour,

and with that petal and its song it made sweet, piteous laments.

A star shone out and became the moon of the gathering,

became friend and companion to our startled heart.

At dawn the nightingale told its tale to the east wind:

"See what love for the rose's face has done to us!"
