Tarji'band · 13th century

In the Tavern I Carry a Jug

Fakhr al-Din Iraqi

In the tavern, with a vagabond companion,

sit down, drink wine and be happy.

From the lovely script on the beloved’s cheek, read

the secret of both worlds, but do not give it away.

I became infatuated with the painting and the pattern

because I cannot reach the painter.

As long as I am with myself, I know nothing of myself;

I wish I had not been with myself for a single breath.

I am hungover from wine; cupbearer, bring

sweets and wine from those sugar-scattering lips.

Since there is no room in the cloisters for

the dreg-drinker, the wine-worshipper and the vagabond,

I too have said farewell to piety;

here I am, night and day, like the riffraff.

In the tavern I carry a jug,

in the hope that I may catch some scent of you.

A note for readers

The first stanza of a tarji’band, a poem of several stanzas each closed by the same refrain couplet: ‘In the tavern I carry a jug, / in the hope that I may catch some scent of you.’ The tavern, the vagabond and the riffraff are the qalandari images by which Persian poets declared their break with outward piety. Khatt, ‘script’, is also the down on the beloved’s cheek.
