All That Is Outside the World

Sanai

All that is outside the world is inside our heart;

both these houses, one after the other, are stations on our road.

All the trouble lies in our nature of water and clay;

what was before heart and clay: that is our dwelling.

A note for readers

One of the many quatrains in Sanai’s Divan. The ‘two houses’ are this world and the next; the poem places both inside the heart and points to a home older than the body made of water and clay.
