A Lifetime on the Beloved’s Tresses

Saeb Tabriziصائب تبریزی

یک عمر می‌توان سخن از زلف یار گفت

One could speak for a lifetime of the beloved’s tresses;

در بند آن مباش که مضمون نمانده است

do not fret that there are no themes left.

A note for readers

A single couplet in which Saeb defends the endless invention of the Indian style, the poetry of his age, which prized new ‘themes’ (mazmun) drawn from old images. The beloved’s long, endlessly curling tresses are themselves an image of inexhaustible poetry.
