Hafez · Ghazal 93 · A drop from your pen
A kind word, a letter, or a sign of remembrance may come to you unexpectedly, and Hafez receives such a word with wonder and gratitude. He reminds you that genuine kindness is never an accident. Let yourself be revived by it, as by a sip of living water. If you are the one who could send such a word, send it: a few lines can bring a weary heart back to life. Answer kindness with loyalty, and let gratitude keep the bond between you strong.
What grace it was that suddenly a drop from your pen
set the claims of our service before your generosity.
With the tip of your pen you have written out my greeting:
may the workshop of time never be without your writing.
I will not say that you remembered me, a heartless wretch, by mistake,
for in the reckoning of reason there are no slips of your pen.
In thanks for the blessing that eternal fortune
has kept you dear and honoured, do not let me be humbled.
Come, for I will make a pact with the tip of your curl
that even if I lose my head, I will not lift it from your feet.
Perhaps your heart will learn of our state only when
the tulip springs up from the dust of those slain by grief for you.
Revive our thirsty soul with a single sip,
since they pour the clear water of Khizr from your cup of Jamshid.
May your time always be happy, O breeze with the breath of Jesus,
for the weary-hearted soul of Hafez came alive at your breath.
