Hafez · Ghazal 67 · Whose is this candle?

The faal · wonder

Something bright has caught your heart, and you are full of questions: where it comes from, whom it belongs to, whether it could be yours. Hafez asks them too, again and again, and receives no clear answer, only a teasing smile at the end. Let that smile reach you. Not every question needs settling today, and the light that draws you is a gift whether or not you possess it. Enjoy its warmth, keep your sense of humour, and let the mystery unfold in its own time.

The ghazal in English

O Lord, from whose house is this heart-kindling candle?
Our soul has burned: ask whose beloved this is.

For now, it is the ruin of the house of my heart and faith:
let us see in whose arms it sleeps, and whose house it shares.

The wine of its ruby lip, may it never be far from mine,
is whose spirit's wine, and the pourer of whose cup?

The fortune of keeping company with that candle of happy radiance,
ask again, for God's sake, to which moth it will be granted.

Everyone tries a spell on her, and it is still unknown
to whose tale her delicate heart inclines.

O Lord, that kingly, moon-faced one with the brow of Venus:
whose matchless pearl is she, whose single jewel?

I said, "Ah, for the mad heart of Hafez, without you!"
Laughing under her breath, she said: "Who is the mad one?"
