Hafez · Ghazal 62 · Welcome, messenger of the yearning

The faal · devotion

You have been waiting for a message, and your heart is ready to give everything for what it loves. Hafez speaks of a devotion so old it seems to have begun before time. Yet he also learns a quiet lesson: not to press too hard, and to let the other's wishes count as much as his own. Sometimes love means stepping back so that something larger can unfold. Say a little less, give a little more room, and trust that what is truly yours will not be lost.

The ghazal in English

Welcome, O messenger of those who yearn: give me the Friend's message,
so I may gladly give my life for the Friend's name.

Like a nightingale in a cage, forever bewildered and wild
is the parrot of my nature, for love of the Friend's sugar and almond.

His curl is a snare, and his mole the grain in that snare, and I,
in hope of a grain, have fallen into the Friend's snare.

He will not lift his head from drunkenness until the dawn of Judgement Day,
whoever, like me, drank at the beginning of time a sip from the Friend's cup.

I will not tell much of the story of my longing, because
to press the Friend more than this would only bring a headache.

If I could, I would draw into my eyes like collyrium
the dust of a road honoured by the Friend's footsteps.

My wish is for union, and His intent is for parting:
I have given up my own desire so that the Friend's desire may be fulfilled.

Hafez, burn on in His pain and live with it uncured,
for the restless pain of the Friend has no cure.
