The faal · good news

Good news is on its way to you, or has already arrived, and Hafez meets it with gratitude rather than anxiety. He reminds you that the sky and the moon turn by a will greater than theirs, so you need not carry every outcome yourself. Even if the wind blows hard around you, keep your lamp lit and stay on the road of patient waiting. What others say matters little when your conscience is clear before the one you love. Give thanks, and let your heart be generous.

The ghazal in English

That renowned courier who came from the Friend's country
brought a charm for the soul in the Friend's musk-scented hand.

Sweetly he gives the signs of the beloved's majesty and beauty;
sweetly he tells the tale of the Friend's honour and grace.

I gave him my heart as a reward for the news, and I am ashamed
of this false coin of mine that I scattered before the Friend.

Thanks be to God that, with the help of fortune that mends affairs,
all the Friend's affairs go just as one would wish.

What choice have the turning sky and the circling moon?
They revolve as the Friend chooses.

Though the wind of turmoil throws both worlds together,
here we are, with the lamp of our eyes, on the road, waiting for the Friend.

Bring me a jewelled salve for my eyes, O morning breeze,
from that fortunate dust that became the Friend's path.

Here we are, at the threshold of love, with heads bowed in need:
let us see whom sweet sleep will carry to the Friend's embrace.

If the enemy breathes a word against Hafez, what fear?
Thank God, I am not ashamed before the Friend.
