Hafez · Ghazal 57 · That dark-skinned beauty

The faal · healing

Someone or something precious may be moving away from you, or you may feel that the one who wounded you also holds the cure. Hafez sees this clearly: the stone-hearted one also carries the breath of Jesus that brings the dead to life. Healing and longing can come from the same place. Honour the goodness you see, the beauty, skill and purity, and trust that it carries blessing with it wherever it goes. Stay faithful and kind; the faithful are held dear, and their good wishes travel far.

The ghazal in English

That dark-skinned one who holds all the sweetness of the world:
the wine-coloured eye, the laughing lip and the glad heart are hers.

Though the sweet-mouthed are all kings,
she is the Solomon of the age, for the seal is hers.

A lovely face, perfection of art and a pure hem:
so the blessing of the pure of both worlds is with her.

The musky mole on that wheat-coloured cheek
holds the secret of the grain that waylaid Adam.

My heart-stealer has resolved to travel; for God's sake, friends,
what shall I do with my wounded heart, when the salve goes with her?

To whom can one tell this point: that stone-hearted one
has slain us, and yet the breath of Jesus, son of Mary, is hers?

Hafez is one of the faithful; hold him dear,
for the forgiveness of many a noble spirit is with him.
