Hafez · Ghazal 54 · My eye sits in blood from weeping

The faal · hope

You may be carrying sorrow or missing someone dear, and Hafez admits that gladness cannot simply be summoned at will. Yet there is real hope in this verse: if the sun of that beloved face rises at the end of the lane, fortune turns blessed at once. Ask for comfort where it can be found, in gentle company, kind words and small pleasures. Like Farhad and Majnun before you, you are not the first to long so deeply. Keep seeking with an open heart; the treasure sought by the poor man is not beyond reach.

The ghazal in English

From weeping, the pupil of my eye sits in blood;
see how it goes with people who are searching for you.

In memory of your ruby lip and your drunken, wine-coloured eye,
the ruby wine I drink from the cup of grief is blood.

If the sun of your face should rise
from the east of the lane's end, my fortune will be blessed.

The tale of the sweet lip is the speech of Farhad;
the twist of Layla's tress is the station of Majnun.

Comfort my heart, for your stature is a heart-comforting cypress;
speak, for your words are graceful and well measured.

Saqi, with the round of wine bring some ease to my soul,
for the pain in my mind comes from the cruel round of the sky.

Since the moment my dear one left my eyes,
the edge of my lap has been like the river Oxus.

How can my sorrowful heart become glad
by my own will, when this is beyond my will?

In his selflessness Hafez goes seeking the beloved,
like a pauper who goes seeking Qarun's treasure.
