Hafez · Ghazal 50 · Caught in the snare of your curl
Hafez points you gently back to yourself. The rose needs no borrowed musk, for its fragrance is its own; and the treasure of your well-being is already in your own house, so do not go seeking it at the doors of those who will not be generous. If you are able to do good for someone, do it while you can, for kindness comes back to the one who gives it. Others will follow their own will, as the rose does; you can only keep your own promises. Keep them, and you will stand on firm ground.
In the snare of your curl my heart is a captive of its own doing;
kill it with a glance, for it has earned this for itself.
If what our heart desires lies within your power,
be ready to do it, for a good deed returns to its doer.
By your life, O sweet-mouthed idol, like the candle
in dark nights my wish is to be consumed.
When you set your mind on love, I told you, O nightingale:
"Don't, for that laughing rose follows only her own will."
The scent of the rose has no need of the musk of China and Chegel,
for its musk-pods come from the fastening of its own robe.
Do not go to the houses of the world's ungenerous,
for the treasure of your well-being is in your own house.
Hafez burned, and in keeping the terms of love
he still holds to his own covenant and faithfulness.
