Hafez · Ghazal 491 · An eyebrow kept in my eye
Hafez has given the reins of his heart to one who cares nothing for crowns or thrones, and from that devotion comes a striking counsel: do not measure love by separation and union. Seek only the Friend's pleasure, for it is a pity to ask anything of the beloved except the beloved. If you are anxious about whether something will come close or stay far, try loosening that question. When the moon is already in your room, the glow of a distant star matters less. Let your love be its own reward.
I have set in my eye the eyebrow of a moon-faced one;
I have painted somewhere the image of one with fresh green down.
There is hope that the charter of my love
will receive its royal seal from that small bow of an eyebrow.
My head has slipped from my hands, my eyes have burned with waiting,
longing for the head and eyes of one who graces every gathering.
My heart is clouded; I will set fire to my cloak;
come and see whom it will make a spectacle of!
On the day it happens, make my coffin of cypress wood,
for I go bearing the scar of one tall as a cypress.
I, a dervish, have given the reins of my heart to one
who cares nothing for anyone's crown or throne.
In that place where the lovely ones strike with the sword of their glance,
do not wonder at a head fallen at someone's feet.
I, who have the moon in my chamber from her face,
what care should I have for the glow of a star?
What are separation and union? Seek the Friend's pleasure,
for it is a pity to ask anything of Him but Him.
The fish would bring up pearls from longing, to scatter them,
if the ship of Hafez should ever reach a sea.
