Hafez · Ghazal 48 · By the light of wine
When your heart is weighed down, try what Hafez did: hold up everything in both worlds before it and see what remains. For him, only love endured; all the rest was passing. Some truths are not learned from the book of reason but from the heart, as only the dawn bird truly knows the rose. If an ease you hoped for has been delayed, it may simply not be its time; you have not been forgotten. Look at the world with a blessed eye, and even stone and clay can turn to rubies.
By the light of wine the Sufi came to know the hidden secret;
by this ruby you can know the true worth of anyone.
Only the bird of dawn knows the worth of the rose's book of petals,
for not everyone who reads a page has grasped its meanings.
I offered the two worlds to my heart, fallen on hard times;
except your love, it knew all the rest to be passing.
The time is gone when I worried about the common crowd;
the morals officer too has come to know of this secret pleasure.
The beloved did not see our ease as fitting for the time;
otherwise, he knew of our anxious heart.
He turns stone and clay to ruby and agate by the blessing of his gaze,
whoever has known the worth of the breath of the Yemeni wind.
O you who learn the verse of love from the book of reason,
I fear you will never truly know this subtle point.
Bring wine, for he will take no pride in the rose of the world's garden,
whoever has known the plundering of the autumn wind.
Hafez knew that this strung pearl of verse that rose from his nature
came from the care and patronage of the second Asaf.
