The faal · patience

Hafez describes a love that has reached its fullness and will not fade, and a waiting that makes each moment apart feel like a year. If you are in a season of waiting, he understands how long the hours can seem. His counsel in the last line is gentle but clear: what is most worth having asks for patience, and complaint only lengthens the night. Hold steady. A love that is truly whole does not decline, and the day of meeting is worth every hour spent on the way to it.

The ghazal in English

The work of your beauty, like my love, has reached perfection;
be glad, for neither of these two will ever decline.

It cannot enter fancy that, in the mind's imagining,
any image lovelier than this could appear in any sense.

The fruit of a lifetime is gained if, with you,
ever in my life, one day, union becomes my portion.

The moment I am with you, a year is a day,
and the moment I am without you, an instant is a year.

How could I see the vision of your face in sleep, my love,
when my eyes have seen nothing of sleep but its phantom?

Have pity on my heart, for from love of your lovely face
my weak body has grown thin as a crescent moon.

Hafez, do not complain; if you want union with the Friend,
you must bear more than this in separation.
